Three Rail Model Railways require locomotives with a third rail collection system. For basic centre rail system this is between the locos driving wheels.

Collectors types are either spring or gravity based. Spring based systems usually have the spring element within a basic brass strip collector. This is probably the easiest method for scratch conversion. Due to upward forces created by the spring the chassis needs to have sufficient weight to ensure the wheels maintain contact with the track.

Spring forces can be avoided by using a gravity collector. Here the collectors falls onto the power rail. A centre piston system as shown on one below or a mechanical lever have been used on commercial systems. Not so easy for the scratch converter, but has less problems in operation.

1  Conversion of Hornby power bogie. The weight of the bogie means a simple brass strip acting as collector works well. Since I took this picture I had to use this bogie in a model I was selling on eBay. Currently the bogie I have the same is not yet working.

2  This basic chassis has been converted with simple brass strips. However in this naked state there is quite a bit of wheel spin when running. Something that is removed when extra weight and a body are added.

3  This Bachmann chassis from and Underground Ernie loco required quite a bit of extra weight to ensure good contact of the brass strip below each bogie with the centre rail. While it works further development is needed with possible a gravity rather than spring collector being fitted.

The drive system on this chassis is quite crude. The worm gear literally rotates below the worm. This rather restricts the minimum radius the chassis can be run on.

4  This light weight bogie meant that fitting a spring collector was not an option. The rather over engineered system adopted provides a pair of gravity collectors and plenty of extra traction weight. The bogie runs very well as shown so can be used with a light weight body. Because the flat pickup was touching the track and shorting on Hornby Dublo the pickups have been domed. This has solved the problem.
